PORT MARIA |

| The diminutive capital of St Mary, PORT MARIA , nestled around a
crescent bay some five miles east of Oracabessa, is one of Jamaica's
most picturesque towns, but once you've taken in the bay view and
strolled the few shopping streets, there's little to keep you here. Most
people turn off the main road before getting into town and travel the
precipitous route up the hill to Firefly (daily 8.30am-5.30pm; US$10),
the Jamaican home of Noel Coward and his partner Graham Payn from 1956
to Coward's death in 1973. The house remains much as Coward left it,
with the table laid as it was on the day the Queen Mother came to lunch
in 1965. Coward died here and is buried on the property. It's worth
going to Firefly for the view alone. The panorama takes in Port Maria
bay and Cabarita Island to the east, with the peaks of the Blue
Mountains poking through the clouds, while to the west lies Galina Point
and lighthouse , the most northerly tip of Jamaica - you may even see
Cuba on a clear day. |
